About the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre in Condensed Matter Physics

The Scottish Doctoral Training Centre in Condensed Matter Physics is a tri-institutional collaboration between the Universities of St Andrews, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt, providing international-level doctoral training in the core discipline of condensed matter physics. It was established in December 2008 with generous funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and offers more than ten 4-year PhD fully funded studentships per annum. The first cohort of students arrived in September 2009.

Students will perform a PhD research project, take graduate level courses, participate in summer schools, conferences and workshops, and receive skills training relevant to their future careers. We aspire to produce rounded graduates equipped to succeed in research, academia, and a wide range of industries and businesses.

Recruitment

We are looking for incoming students that have (i) a strong academic track record and (ii) the ability and motivation to benefit from the courses and research opportunities offered.

If selected to join our Doctoral Training Centre, you will:

  • Have access to world-leading facilities in three different university departments, with transportation between them fully funded by the Centre.
  • Be assigned a PhD project from the beginning of your time at the Centre. This will enable you to make an immediate start to your research.
  • Take graduate courses, tailored to your particular needs, spread over the first two years of your time at the Centre.
  • Have a choice of elective courses from the sixty graduate courses offered by the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) Graduate School, with which our Centre is a partner.
  • Benefit from a wide range of transferable skills training and personal development opportunities. These include (i) attending courses and seminars provided by the participating universities and the Centre's Industrial Associates and (ii) taking part in activities such as teaching undergraduates or science outreach.
  • If you are awarded a studentship by the Centre this will provide a generous annual stipend 10% higher than the standard EPSRC rate, a £2000 starting allowance for personal equipment e.g. laptop computer and £2500 per annum for conference and workshop attendance.
